Daring Democracy Series
Born out of our goal to involve the greater Cape Ann community in important justice issues and concerns. The Social Justice Committee is continuing to work to sponsor events that dare us to continue to work on issues of protecting the democracy and other social justice issues. If you are interested in learning more, we would love to have you join our Social Justice Committee meetings. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
We presented four events open to the public in 2019. These events each drew attendance of 50 to 150 people. The following presentations and their speakers took place:
- “The Perfect 36” – Guest Speaker: Laura Harrington
- “Street Doctor: Stories from the Shadows” – Guest Speaker: Dr. Jim O’Connell (all proceeds donated to Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program)
- “Courage Building During Times that Try Democracy” – Guest Speaker: John Bach (all proceeds donated to Massachusetts Peace Action)
- “Crisis at Our Southern Border” – Guest Speakers: Westy Egmont, Carol and Dennis St John (all proceeds divided between the ACLU and the Florence Project in Tucson)
Three films and three nationally known speakers with a closing discussion facilitated by the League of Women Votes, happened in 2018. One event monthly leading up to the mid-term elections. This was a very successful endeavor. Films drew approximately 40 participants and speakers Francis Lappe, Chuck Collins, Michael Wheeler, Jeff Jacoby and Joan Vennochi drew nearly 100 participants at each event.
